Today’s story ends with Jesus’ heroic mission collapsing on a cross: an apparent and abject failure. Given the state of the world and society, or the state of our lives, we might come to the same judgment about Jesus’ power to save. But here we are, pressing on, resolute in repeating God’s promise that evil and evildoers will not have the last word.
It’s only human that faith is tested, even abandoned, on the cross. But thanks to Jesus Christ, the cross—his cross, our cross—has become the place where faith is not lost but found and fortified. Such is the glory, the triumph of Christ crucified: the rest of today’s story.
