There’s no indication that these 72 disciples received any special training for their mission—other than, of course, their apprenticeship under the Master himself, formed by all that he said and did. Now, they were being sent into foreign territory, hostile to them and to what they had to offer.
For some Americans, the U.S. has begun to feel like a foreign land. What ever happened to, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free?” Far from that bigheartedness, we are witnessing an avalanche of federal legislation that punishes the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses, the sick, the young, the old, and immigrants—undocumented and documented alike.
In the face of all this, we may feel like lambs among wolves: ill-equipped, lacking the capacity, the training, to confront the hostility to Jesus’ way. But, as Christian disciples with a lifetime of learning from the Master, we bear, as St. Paul says today, the mark of Jesus on our very bodies, his presence, his Spirit, embedded in us, inspiring us, equipping us, compelling us to demonstrate and foster the highest human ideals—or, at least, common human decency.
Today’s gospel continues with Jesus giving, perhaps, his best advice. If those to whom you are sent do not receive you, shake their dust from your feet. Don’t let it cling to you. Don’t be contaminated by it. It’s toxic. It can kill faith, hope, and love. Do not let them kill your faith, your hope, and your love.

Para algunos estadounidenses, los Estados Unidos ha comenzado a sentirse como una tierra extranjera. En la Estatua de la Libertad está escrito: “Dame tus cansados, tus pobres, tus masas apiñadas que anhelan respirar libres”. Pero lejos de esa compasión, estamos presenciando una avalancha de legislación federal que castiga a los cansados, los pobres y las masas apiñadas, los enfermos, los jóvenes, los ancianos y a los inmigrantes, tanto indocumentados como documentados.
Ante todo esto, podemos sentirnos como corderos en medio de lobos: mal equipados, sin la capacidad, la entrenamiento, para enfrentar la hostilidad hacia el camino de Jesús. Pero como discípulos cristianos con toda una vida de aprendizaje del Maestro, llevamos, como dice hoy San Pablo, la marca de Jesús en nuestros propios cuerpos, su presencia, su Espíritu, incrustado en nosotros, inspirándonos, equipándonos, motivándonos a demostrar y fomentar los más altos ideales humanos—o, al menos, la decencia humana común.
El evangelio de hoy continúa con Jesús dando su mejor consejo. Si aquellos a quienes eres enviado no te reciben, sacude el polvo de los pies. No dejes que se adhiera a ti. No te dejes contaminar por ello. Es tóxico. Puede matar la fe, la esperanza y el amor. No dejes que maten tu fe, tu esperanza y tu amor.
