When we dare to stop and look around, we’re likely troubled at how little fruit, how little good, has come from two millennia of Christian seed-sowing. Yet, on the other hand, here we are, not 250 but 2,000 years later, talking about it: it still matters. While not minimizing how much has yet to be accomplished, perhaps we should be surprised and grateful that anything has sprung up at all given all the rocks, thorns, and weeds.
Note that the title of today’s tale is, “The Parable of the Sower”—not “The Parable of Various Types of Soil.” It’s not first about us and our challenges, failures, and shortcomings—our rocks, thorns, and weeds. Jesus’ focus, rather, is the extravagant, indiscriminate, prolific and persistent sower. Despite the obstacles, no matter the climate, and against all odds, he doesn’t quit. He keeps reaching into his seed sack and slinging those precious seeds. Life in abundance.
In those moments when God’s word seems ineffective and his promise hollow, remember that, despite the odds, you are here. More potent than whatever might have taken us down, a strength and grace quite beyond our own has sustained us. Two thousand years of faith-filled survivors are the sign and sacrament that in an ever-groaning world, God’s word and work are being accomplished in our very being. “My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” Thus says the Lord. Thus promises the Lord.
