Last week, in their beautiful homily and witness, the Mendoza family told us that they came to Ascension three years ago to receive the sacraments of initiation. But they discovered something more: a place where they could not only get something, but where they could bring their own gifts to share—gifts that were welcomed and valued. They began to share their gift of dance. They help to distribute groceries. They share their prayer and presence. They found not only a community in which they belonged, they’ve helped to create a community where others can come to experience that too. In describing stewardship, the Mendozas nailed it. They said, “We learned that the gifts that God gives us are not only received but are also meant to be shared.”
Ascension is blessed by so, so many of you who know and practice that, and I am deeply grateful. You understand that the blessings we have are not meant only for ourselves, but intended to be generative, to enrich our community as well as to those beyond this block. We are stewards, caretakers, middlemen—and -women, and -children—who are charged with creating new and abundant life out of the abundance with which we have been blessed.
