The empire strikes back. Today’s episode of the Christmas story is not the stuff of Christmas carols. As a newborn, Jesus meets a violent and threatening world, an arena where some forever strive to dominate others. Herod taunts, crushes and kills. His power-mad ambition to be king of the world is threatened by this baby—because in this seemingly poor child is true power.
The Incarnation, by which human flesh is consecrated, is intended to have us embrace our humanity: to accept the fact that there are inherent limitations that every human being faces; that there are aspects of our lives that we cannot change; that we’re often powerless over what happens to us and to others. We reflexively want to escape these human realities. But Jesus, by accepting his poverty in Bethlehem, and surrendering to his powerlessness on Calvary, taught us how to be human. When we recognize and embrace our limits, we create space for a power beyond our own to inhabit us: Divinity itself. We realize our full human potential by living out of the presence of God-With-Us, God-Within-Us. That’s how Jesus did it.
Put on, holy and beloved ones, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience…Let the peace of Christ control your hearts…Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

El imperio contraataca. El episodio de hoy de la historia navideña no es material para villancicos. Como recién nacido, Jesús se encuentra con un mundo violento y amenazante, como una arena en donde algunos siempre intentan dominar a los demás. Herodes se burla, aplasta y mata. Su ambición desmedida de ser rey del mundo se ve amenazada por este bebé, porque en este niño aparentemente pobre reside el verdadero poder.
La Encarnación, mediante la cual la carne humana es consagrada, tiene la intención de que abracemos nuestra humanidad: aceptar el hecho de que existen limitaciones inherentes a las que se enfrenta todo ser humano; que hay aspectos de nuestra vida que no podemos cambiar; que a menudo somos impotentes frente a lo que nos sucede a nosotros y a los demás. Puede que deseemos escapar de estas realidades humanas, pero Jesús las abrazó hasta el final y, al hacerlo, nos enseñó cómo ser humanos. Cuando aceptamos nuestra pobreza como lo hizo Jesús en Belén, cuando nos rendimos a nuestra impotencia como él lo hizo en el Calvario, creamos el espacio para que un poder más allá del nuestro, la propia Divinidad, nos habite. Viviendo desde la presencia de Dios-Con-Nosotros, Dios-Dentro-De-Nosotros, realizamos nuestro pleno potencial. Así lo hizo Jesús.
Puesto que Dios los ha elegido a ustedes, los ha consagrado a él y les ha dado su amor, sean compasivos, magnánimos, humildes, afables y pacientes… Que en sus corazones reine la paz de Cristo…Que la palabra de Cristo habite en ustedes con toda su riqueza.
