The Jewish-American poet, Emma Lazarus, a Portuguese immigrant, wrote the famous lines inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…Send these, the homeless, the tempest-tost to me.” She names the statue “Mother of Exiles.” “From her beacon-hand,” she writes, “glows world-wide welcome.”
Long before there was a statue to welcome the tired and poor, Jesus offered them/us a home: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus doesn’t first invite the powerful and self-assured, but the burdened, the frightened, the homeless, the tempest-tossed. His heart opens to those who yearn to breathe free.
On Friday, Pope Leo said,
In these past two-hundred and fifty years, for so many peoples throughout the world, it was the firm resolve to achieve the noble vision of the nation’s founders that made America a byword for freedom, as the country opened its doors to successive waves of immigrants,
enabling them and their children to play their part in shaping the future of the nation.
Our nation’s 250th year has been a challenging one for our little corner of the country. The Holy Father said Friday that building a society of liberty and justice for all is not easy. This historic anniversary, he said,
…presents us with the opportunity to reflect once again on the nation’s founding principles in the hope that America will remain ever true to the dream that has earned it the title of land of the free and home of the brave.
That is one of this nation’s highest callings. Our Christian calling is higher still. While America is a byword for freedom, the Body of Christ, the true Mother of Exiles, must be the byword for a more profound freedom—sublime rest for all who are burdened. May we, starting with our little corner, embody the God in whom rest is found, a golden door, a glowing beacon-hand of world-wide welcome.
