When his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light, Jesus is said to have been transfigured. Perhaps, however, it was not so much Jesus being transformed as the apostles. Their normally limited vision captured for the first time the radiance at Jesus’ core: his essence, his lifeforce, his soul.
In these terrible times, we have witnessed the worst of us: greed, malevolence, and inhumanity. Yet at the same time, we in Minneapolis have witnessed people responding bravely and brilliantly, whether in resistance on the streets or endurance in their homes, compelled by some force at their core, a power they didn’t know they had. Call it “soul.”
Clarissa Pinkola Estés says that, in a troubled world, one of the most calming and powerful actions you can do is to stand up and show your soul. “Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times,” she writes.
The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires…causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these—to be fierce and to show mercy toward others, both—are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it.
While they handled Jesus’ dazzling appearance, the voice from the cloud flattened them. “Get up,” Jesus says. In what could be a commentary, Dr. Estés writes,
Didn’t you say you pledged to listen to a voice greater? Didn’t you ask for grace? Don’t you remember that to be in grace means to submit to the Voice greater? You have all the resource you need to ride any wave, to surface from any trough…We all have a heritage and history of being gutted, and yet remember this especially…we have also, of necessity, perfected the knack of resurrection.
“Rise, and do not be afraid.”

Cuando su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol, y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la nieve, se dice que Jesús fue transfigurado. Sin embargo, quizás no fue tanto Jesús quien se transformó, sino los apóstoles. Su visión normalmente limitada captó por primera vez el resplandor en el núcleo de Jesús: su esencia, su fuerza vital, su alma.
En estos tiempos terribles, hemos sido testigos de lo peor de nosotros: codicia, mala voluntad e inhumanidad. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, nosotros en Minneapolis hemos visto a personas responder con valentía y brillantez, ya sea en el activismo en las calles o en la resistencia en sus hogares, impulsadas por alguna fuerza en su interior, un poder que no sabían que tenían. Llámalo “alma”.
Clarissa Pinkola Estés dice que, en un mundo problemático, una de las acciones más calmantes y poderosas que puedes hacer es levantarte y mostrar tu alma. “El alma en cubierta brilla como oro en tiempos oscuros”, escribe.
La luz del alma lanza chispas, puede enviar bengalas, construye hogueras de señal…hace que los asuntos apropiados se enciendan. Mostrar la linterna del alma en tiempos sombríos como estos—ser feroz y mostrar misericordia hacia los demás, ambos—son actos de inmensa valentía y la mayor necesidad. Las almas en lucha captan luz de otras almas que están completamente encendidas y dispuestas a mostrarla.
Mientras ellos toleraban la deslumbrante apariencia de Jesús, la voz desde la nube los dejó paralizados. “Levántense”, dice Jesús. En lo que podría ser un comentario, la Dra. Estés escribe,
¿No dijiste que te comprometiste a escuchar una voz superior? ¿No pediste gracia? ¿No recuerdas que estar en gracia significa someterse a la Voz superior? Tienes todos los recursos que necesitas para surfear cualquier ola, para emerger de cualquier valle…Todos tenemos una herencia e historia de haber sido despojados, y sin embargo recuerda esto especialmente…también hemos, por necesidad, perfeccionado la habilidad de la resurrección.
