Some “leading men of the city” and “women of prominence” are a little peeved at Pope Leo XIV. Already. I’ve come across words like, “outrage” and “disgust.” In a social media post this week, a woman of some prominence who apparently has the ear of the President, described the Holy Father as, “anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis.” Because the Pope is for the poor, immigrants, and the rights of workers, and against the inhumanity of forcibly separating good mothers from their children, and cruelty in general, doesn’t mean he’s Marxist. It means he’s Catholic.
In the Acts of the Apostles, we hear how the resurrection of Jesus Christ spawned a vibrant and brave Church, ready to spend themselves in the face of risk, resistance, and persecution, willing to alienate the “leading men of the city” and “women of prominence” for the sake of the Gospel, for the sake of the marginalized and stranger—in this case, the Gentiles. (That’s us.) The disciples were fearless, because they knew that they were in God’s hand—and that God’s hand was in them through the indwelling of the Spirit of the Risen and Living Christ. They were in him, and he was in them.
To her assessment of Pope Leo in the post I mentioned, the writer added, “Catholics don’t have anything good to look forward to.” If she is suggesting a rough ride ahead, she’s absolutely right. Following the lead of a gentle and brave shepherd, the resurrection of Jesus Christ impels us forward and outward for the sake of the Gospel, for the sake of the marginalized and stranger. We may incite women of prominence and leading men of the city. But no one will, no one can, take us out of the shepherd’s hand.

Algunos “ciudadanos principales” y “mujeres devotas de la alta Sociedad” ya están un poco molestos con el Papa León XIV. He encontrado palabras como “indignación” y “asco”. En un programa de las redes sociales esta semana, una mujer que aparentemente tiene la atención del Presidente, describió al Santo Padre como “anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-fronteras abiertas, y un total marxista como el Papa Francisco”. Porque el Papa es por los pobres, los inmigrantes y los derechos de los trabajadores, y en contra de la inhumanidad de separar a la fuerza a las madres de sus hijos, y de la crueldad en general, no significa que sea marxista. Significa que es católico.
En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, oímos cómo la resurrección de Jesucristo dio origen a una Iglesia vibrante y valiente, dispuesta a entregarse ante el riesgo, la resistencia y la persecución, dispuesta a alienar a los “ciudadanos principales” y a las “mujeres devotas de la alta sociedad” en por el bien del Evangelio, por el bien de los marginados y del extraño—en este caso, los gentiles. Los discípulos no tenían miedo, porque sabían que estaban en la mano de Dios—y que la mano de Dios estaba en ellos a través de la morada del Espíritu del Cristo Resucitado y Viviente. Ellos estaban en él, y él estaba en ellos.
Siguiendo su evaluación del Papa León en el post que mencioné, la escritora añadió: “Los católicos no tienen nada bueno a qué aferrarse.” Si está sugiriendo un camino difícil por delante, tiene toda la razón. Siguiendo el ejemplo de un pastor amable y valiente, la resurrección de Jesucristo nos impulsa hacia adelante y hacia afuera por el bien del Evangelio, por el bien de los marginados y los extraños. Podemos provocar a mujeres devotas de la alta sociedad y ciudadanos principales. Pero nadie lo hará, nadie puede sacarnos de la mano del pastor.
