Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Easy for him to say—except he didn’t say it after everything turned out okay. He said it the night before he died. He was familiar with a troubled heart. He shared the grief, fear and uncertainty of the disciples. Speaking, perhaps, for all of us, Thomas and Philip said, “We don’t know where we’re going…We don’t know the way…Master, show us the way.” Jesus’ response is striking. He doesn’t hand them a map, a plan, a set of directions. He simply says, “I am the way.” “The way” is his presence, his companionship: someone to walk with.
For all the insight and clarity the Christian life can offer, it is often unsettling and obscure. It compels us to be in relationship, to take another’s hand, to trust a presence that walks with us. We want certainty and security, we want to know how the future will turn out—our health, our relationships, this or that situation. Jesus didn’t remove the unknown for the disciples, nor for us. But he enters it, he steps into it with us.
So, while we often don’t know where we’re going, we don’t have to try to get there alone. We dare the next step because we are part of a community of seekers who walk together in fear and hope. Even more, we have Christ. As those of you who are making your First Communion today remind us, Jesus is always walking with us. Jesus’ body enters our own: “the way” is within us. “You are in me and I am in you.” Christ in us and with us: our way, our truth, our life.

No les da un mapa, un plan, un conjunto de instrucciones. Simplemente dice: “Yo soy el camino.” “El camino” es su presencia, su compañía: alguien con quien caminar.
A pesar de toda la comprensión y claridad que la vida cristiana puede ofrecer, a menudo es inquietante y oscura. Nos obliga a estar en relación, a tomar la mano de otro, a confiar en una presencia que camina con nosotros. Queremos certeza y seguridad, queremos saber cómo resultará el futuro: nuestra salud, nuestras relaciones, tal o cual situación. Jesús no eliminó lo desconocido para los discípulos, ni para nosotros. Pero él entra en ello, da un paso dentro con nosotros.
Entonces, aunque a menudo no sabemos a dónde vamos, no tenemos que intentar llegar allí solos. Nos atrevemos al siguiente paso porque somos parte de una comunidad de buscadores que caminan juntos en el miedo y la esperanza. Aún más, tenemos a Cristo. Como ustedes, que hoy están haciendo su Primera Comunión, nos recuerdan, Jesús siempre camina con nosotros. El cuerpo de Jesús entra en el nuestro: “el camino” está dentro de nosotros. “Tú estás en mí y yo estoy en ti.” Cristo en nosotros y con nosotros: nuestro camino, nuestra verdad, nuestra vida.
